Describe a situation (in your specific area of expertise) that was particularly challenging, and how you helped the client through this difficulty?

Last summer, our Estate Planning Consultant Alasdair went out to visit John. John had been referred to our Free Will Writing Service by Macmillan Cancer Care. A resilient individual in his 70s, John was a two-time cancer survivor who was in remission and recovery. Therefore, it was a priority that we got out to visit him to take his Will instructions.

Alasdair drove to Edinburgh to visit John at his home for his consultation. As a widower, John was keen to leave his assets and sentimental objects to his family – his two children who had supported him throughout his treatment and his two wonderful grandchildren.

However, navigating the complexities of estate planning can be daunting, especially for someone recovering from serious illness. John’s situation required sensitive handling – it was crucial that we provided him a comfortable space where he could ask questions and make informed decisions regarding the future of his estate.

We were able to assist John by drafting his Will, and providing him with the necessary information about arranging a Power of Attorney in the near future. This comprehensive service ensured that his wishes were legally documented. Furthermore, John now understands that in the event of any future incapacity, we can arrange for his affairs to be managed according to his preferences.

In a touching gesture, John decided to leave a legacy to Macmillan, a charity who has supported him throughout his journey which reflected his gratitude and desire to support others who may find themselves in similar situations.

John was able to receive his Will, giving him peace of mind that his children and grandchildren would be taken care and that his wishes would be respected.

Thomas Bradley & Co’s approach is centred on empathy and understanding. We aim to make the Estate Planning process as smooth and stress-free as possible by:

  • Offering specialised advice and information tailored to his health situation.
